Worthing Road Speed Limit Reduction Update

Following the strong support shown by residents in last year's survey, Southwater Parish Council has continued to work with West Sussex County Council to progress the proposed reduction of the 40mph speed limit to 30mph at the north and south ends of Worthing Road. More than 400 residents took part in the consultation, with a clear majority supporting the proposal to improve safety for everyone using the road.
We have now been advised that, due to the scale of the scheme, the proposal is being progressed through a Community Highways Application scheme, as it exceeds the budget available through the standard Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process.
West Sussex County Council has advised that we should know by January 2027 whether the application has been successful. If approved, the works are expected to be delivered between April 2028 and April 2029.
We appreciate that many residents were hoping to see the changes happen sooner. Unfortunately, highway improvement schemes of this nature involve several stages and statutory processes, all of which take time. We will continue to keep residents informed as the project progresses.
