Celebrating Two Remarkable Milestones at Beeson House
Last week, Beeson House was the setting for not one, but two special celebrations as we marked significant milestones for two organisations that have served the Southwater community with dedication for decades.
Southwater Library celebrated its 20th anniversary, while the Southwater Community Police Office marked an impressive 30 years of service.
The library officially opened its doors in September 2006 after what local newspapers described as "30 years of waiting". As the first new library to be built in West Sussex for 25 years, it was designed to be at the heart of the village and has remained exactly that. Located within Beeson House, the library brought modern facilities, thousands of books and a welcoming community space to Southwater. Over the past two decades, it has become much more than a place to borrow books. It has supported learning, encouraged a love of reading across generations, and provided a valued space where people can come together, discover new interests and access information and services.
Sharing the same building, the Southwater Community Police Office has been providing a reassuring local presence since 1996. Run entirely by dedicated volunteers, it was established when the village police house was sold, ensuring that Southwater residents would continue to have a local policing presence. Over the last 30 years, volunteers have welcomed residents, offered advice and support, answered enquiries and helped signpost people to the right services.
Many volunteers have given decades of service, helping to create an operation that has become a nationally recognised example of community volunteering.
Both organisations demonstrate the strength of community spirit in Southwater. Whether through promoting literacy, learning and inclusion, or supporting community safety and wellbeing, the library and police office have made a lasting difference to countless residents over the years.
As neighbours in Beeson House, Southwater Parish Council is proud to congratulate both teams on their landmark anniversaries. We would like to thank all the staff, volunteers, past and present, whose hard work, commitment and care have helped these services thrive.
