Horsham District Council News Release 23rd February 2010 states....
THE market at Southwater is set to restart in March.
On Friday 12 March the Southwater village market will be restarting in Lintot Square and will be on Fridays from 4pm until 9pm every week.
The market is a joint initiative between Horsham District Council, Southwater Parish Council and the Southwater Action Team.
The aim of the market is to provide a place for residents in the village to do some shopping before the weekend, at a time after work and school which is convenient to them.
Cllr Roger Paterson, Cabinet Member for Local Economy and Leisure at Horsham District Council, said:
“By tailoring this market to what the shoppers want we can provide a truly individual market for the village. The times of the market have been decided so people can pop in on their way back from work so they can pick up something to enjoy over the weekend, or tide them over until they do their supermarket shop. Combined with the already thriving shops in Lintot Square, this will make for a truly enjoyable shopping experience.”
Items available from the stalls will include bread, fruit and vegetables, plants, cakes and tools, but residents can make suggestions on what stalls they’d like to see by talking to Tanya or Bob Price who run the fruit and vegetable stall because the couple book the stallholders.
Catherine Tobin, Clerk for Southwater Parish Council, said:
"Southwater Parish Council very much welcomes back the Friday market to Lintot Square after its planned winter break. It offers local residents an even greater diversity of shopping on their doorstep. The market ideally complements the excellent range of high quality goods and services already provided by local retailers in the heart of the parish."
Mark Carey, Chair of the Business Group for the Southwater Action Group, has helped to arrange for the market to be restarted.
He said: “This is a timely shift to meet the needs of local residents and attract people to Lintot Square. People want a market and were disappointed when it stopped. Spring is a good time to kick start this new market, but residents will need to support this. We look forward to seeing you all down there.”
