Submitted on Monday 18 October 2010 by Catherine Tobin

"Community Empowerment is about people and government working together to make life better.

The aim of the Community Empowerment Awards is to encourage and reward the dedication and enthusiasm of local people, voluntary organisations and community groups, who have worked with the County Council to influence decisions about their communities and the services they receive and can demonstrate their ability to work together to influence decisions about their community and their services.

There are a number of advantages to applying not least in raising awareness to and the profile of local community and voluntary groups in their dedicated work improving communities, but also to allow the Council to get a better understanding of the wealth of existing practise and the hard work of individuals and groups trying to make a difference for them and communities.

Any individual or group wishing to enter for the Awards must complete a case study on their project.  Projects will be assessed on the basis of their case study and a short presentation made tothe Awards Panel at the end of November 2010.  Each of the three winning local projects will each receive a plaque identifying them as an empowerment champion and £1000 Award for lst.  The lst place West Sussex champion will then to to the Regional Panel in early 2011 who will categorise a lst, 2nd and thrd place empowerment champion who will receive a lst prize of £5,000, 2nd of £3,000 and 3rd of £1,500.
