HORSHAM DISTRICT COUNCIL HEALTH WALKS

All welcome to guided, free, sociable, HDC walks led by trained volunteers; no need to book, just turn-up at the start point (if you are new to our scheme please arrive 15 minutes before the start time for registration). Programme booklet containing about 200 walks is available by contacting the Walks Co-ordinator on 01403 215269 or by downloading from the website (enter Horsham DC Walks on a search site, e.g. Google). Beginners are recommended to contact the Walk Leader to discuss suitability. Forthcoming walks in the Southwater Parish and neighbouring areas are as follows:-

December 2012

Tuesday, 4th December, 10.00 am: Countryman Inn, Shipley, going North, 5½ mile mostly flat circular walk (5 stiles) through farmland, Shipley village and Knepp Park passing King’s Windmill (largest in Sussex, built in 1879, once owned by Hilaire Belloc), the Norman church, Knepp Castle, the beautiful Kneppmill Pond and on to the ruins of the original Knepp castle. The Knepp Estate Manager, if available, will give us a ten minute talk. Could see Fallow Deer, Tamworth Pigs, Exmoor Ponies and Old English Longhorn Cattle. Friday, 7th December, 10.00 am: West Grinstead. Park and meet at St George’s Parish Church, Steyning Road (RH13 8LR), from Horsham along A24 after Buck Barn traffic lights turn left along B2135 signposted Partridge Green then first right at wooden bungalow. Flat 5 mile circular walk over farmland. Excellent views of the South Downs. No dogs. 2 ½ hours. Leaders Jean G 01403 250869 & Alex 273751

Fridays, 7th & 21st December, 11.00 am: Barns Green, 2 mile mostly flat circular walk around the outskirts of the village mainly on firm ground. Meet at the corner of the green near the Village Club. One hour. Leader Peter 01403 741305

Fridays, 14th & 28th December, 11.00 am: Southwater, 2 ½ mile flat circular walk along bridleways, country lanes and the Downs Link.. Meet in the Country Park car park (off Cripplegate Lane) TQ 161258. Dogs allowed on a lead. 1 hour. The Park café will be open for refreshments at the end if you wish. Leader Pat 01403 240654

Saturday, 15th December, 10.00 am: Itchingfield, 4 ½ mile circular walk, some stiles, past Muntham House School to Barns Green, pausing in the memorial garden, then on under the railway line to Marlands and back to the start. Meet (park outside) at Itchingfield School (TQ 132287, RH13 0PJ). No dogs. 2 hours. Leader Tony 01403 269232

Saturday, 29th December, 10.00 am: Horsham Going South, 5 mile, mostly flat, circular walk from the historic Causeway, past the elegant spired 13th Century Church of St Mary the Virgin, over the meadows and gentle wooded slopes of Denne Park, to Coltstaple Lane, Southwater, and back along Pedlar’s Way via Chesworth Farm. Some stiles. Lovely views of Horsham. Meet in front of St Mary’s Church. No dogs. 2 ½ hours. Leader Jill 07780 701184

 

Wednesday, 2nd January, 10.30 am: Bax Castle, Two Mile Ash Road, past Christ’s Hospital School, four mile circular walk, some stiles and modest climbs, over farmland and through woods. Meet at the pub car park (TQ 147272). No dogs. 2 hours. Leader John 01403 263661

Sunday, 6th January, 9.30 am: Copsale, New Walk: 5 mile figure of eight beautiful walk along the Downs Link, east & west of Copsale, across fields and along country lanes, mostly flat, maybe muddy with the occasional stile. Dogs on a lead only. 2 hours. Walkers are welcome to join leaders at the end at Copsale Village Hall for bacon butties £2.50 & tea/ coffee £1, raising funds for the village hall.
